What is Hell Week?

The best week of the year! A week where YOU swim 6 separate workouts over a span of 8 days.

This is self guided, meaning you will likely be swimming on your own during lap swim at a public pool. We highly encourage you to find friends to swim with but there will not be organized swims with coaches, aside from our regularly scheduled swims with JD.

Please note, ANY coached masters workouts DO COUNT towards Hell Week.

Why are we doing Hell Week?

  • To make you a better swimmer by increasing volume
  • To explore your options: there are tons of beautiful pools available to the public in the city
  • To empower you: if you can survive Hell Week, then you can survive anything

Okay, but why should I do Hell Week?

You’ll become a better swimmer!!! And you’ll get a cool sticker!! And maybe win a prize!

How do I “survive” Hell Week?

We want Hell Week to be challenging AND fun for anyone who dares to attempt it. We do NOT want anyone to think they are too slow, not good enough, or worried about injuries.

Here’s what you do:

Notes:

  • You are not allowed to repeat sets
  • All workouts are designed using “base intervals” so they are adaptable to your speed
  • Sets other than those in the set library do not count UNLESS they are a coached masters swim workout (GGTC or otherwise)
  • If your pace in a pool is 1:45 per 100 yards or slower, you have the option to swim any 30 minute workout of your choice in lieu of a set from the library.
  • You are allowed to swim in open water for a maximum of THREE workouts - an open water workout must be 30 minutes minimum to count for a Hell Week Workout.

Please email (swim@ggtc.org) or message Aimee (916 878 8082) if you have any questions!
