GGTC Cycling Clinic: Descending 101 (Session 1)
Do you dread cresting the top of a hill, realizing that you are about to have to go back down it? Does the fear of crashing make you squeeze the brakes on every descent? Does people saying "don't brake in the corner" make you question their sanity?
Let's learn how to apply solid fundamentals to safe, downhill riding to overcome those fears! Note - this will not focus on descending speed, but rather on proper descending technique: Body/Pedal Positioning, Weight Distribution, Proper Braking, and Choosing a Safe Line. Once you feel more comfortable with descending, you'll hopefully feel more confident with going faster. We will have experienced descenders help guide you and show proper technique. For safety, this event will be limited to 20 participants.
A Beginner Group will do repeats from the Roundabout up and down McCullough Road, a 0.85 mile stretch with a few corners and mostly car-free. The grade is basically a constant -8.5% and involves one hairpin turn. Hoping this group can get through 3-4 repeats.
A Intermediate Group will warm up with a descent of McCullough Road before climbing back up to do the Backside of Hawk. This descent features a steep -18% grade with several off-camber turns. Please use caution during this descent. There is no reason to ever pass someone on this initial downhill. After a brief rise, the road enters a series of snake-curves where you can practice linking corners while holding speed. Circle back through the headlands along Bunker Road before rejoining the group on McCullough Road.
Info about the ride:
Make sure to bring LIGHTS, helmet, water, flat repair system, and a safety-first mindset! Signing the waiver is absolutely mandatory for this event.
